As a collector myself, can I just say the problem ISN’T collectors, the problem is bulk buyers and companies. And when I say “bulk buyers” I don’t mean people who buy one or two versions of the same album, I mean people who buy HUNDREDS of the same album; and then they just ditch those albums in the street or in the trash when they’re done with them. I’ve been collecting for a little over a year now and I’m in the community, most of us just buy or trade albums and photocards that we truly adore and want, it’s not usually an absurd amount that causes waste. And if we want to get rid of something we sell, trade, or give it away. We’re not wasteful or a threat to the environment. Collectors are NOT the problem, the problem is people who buy hundreds of albums for a slim chance at winning a fan call and then dumping all those albums in the streets. Also people who buy albums just for the photocards and then ditch the album in the street. I absolutely agree that those people need to stop. And companies are also at fault because they know that this is happening but they encourage it because it gives them more sales. I also agree that sales aren’t impressive anymore because of bulk buyers. I just wanted to give my two cents as a collector.

I'm not even a kpop stan and Plave brought me in.. there's so many first time things i see in kpop community (I do hear KDA and Heartsteel though). Being a longtime in vtuber community i was quite surprised how the community is SO difficult to accept them, unable to differentiate AI and vtubers, being obsessed with rl identitiy and all.. which made me quite sad. Nevertheless, i'm happy they do get a lot of recognition despite being anonymous though. Some people just stayed because of talent and their personallity, and Plave had them all :)) Witnessing their organic growth is really one of my proud moments.

Bulk buying is sometimes for ppl like myself who dont have local kpop stores so we join group orders on insta where someone else buys a large amount of albums for a group of people, often limiting it to 2/3 per person cos shipping and tax lol. I do agree tho that we need more sustainable ways of enjoying tangible elements of kpop like maybe having less versions of albums or more phtotcards for larger groups (looking at you SM 🙄) and reducing or just scrapping the idea of POBs cos kpop stans themselves have become crooks with prices 😭😭 but as a South African kpop stan, for now I'll shut my mouth cos this is the best i can get until a kpop group holds a concert with a full on meet and greet in my country without it costing my uni fees 🥹

If you as a fan of a group are buying more than one or 2 albums of a single release, YOU are the problem my dude not the companies. They wouldn't be churning out these many albums if yalls obsessive ass didn't keep buying.

This is such an important topic and thank you for talking about it. Buying many albums, even 1 of each version, has lost its joy for me. I only buy 1 album now. I do enjoy collecting photocards and I know lots of people do too, but I hope more people will stop the cycle of overconsumption.

The bulk trashing of physical Kpop albums is disgusting, all for a photo card?! At this point companies need to release one album, not multiple covers and NO photo cards! But all companies care about is money and “album sales” which are not accurate.

these ppl are completely missing the point, fans r buying tons of albums just bc of the inclusions are random and there is a ton of them. the solution is simply including the whole set so every fan only has to buy one album, while still owning the music physically

I mean it’s not good but international famous figures have been making multiple albums for years.

I don't really care about photo cards, book photos, poster ecc. I just care about the CD. Probably I'm one of the minority of people that still listen to CD. So I will love the return of 1st generation CDS. I know it will never happen but if there is the option I will buy a version similar to 1st generation with more joy.

Since I don't listen the CDs, I treat my albums as art books / display items so I usually never pre order and I check unboxing videos so that I know do I want a specific album version or not. I made that decision because I already collect so many other things too and I think it's healthy to have a limit with your own collection. I don't collect photocards (like every single one), I might get one I like and I try to trade / sell the cards I don't personally need. I personally hate the whole bulk buying and then dumbing them just bc you MIGHT get a chance with a phone call etc (I personally think fancalls are so cringy anyway). Apparently in the US people steal photocards from the albums like at target or something. I personally don't follow the album sales etc and again, I just get albums that I like (often as second hand) and I try to remind myself that I don't have to buy everything my favs put out. Kpop has become so materialistic and money hungry that its lowkey sad.

Make Kpop fans buy albums in bulk and throw it away just to get photocards or chance to get fan sign or to help boost the “album sales” so yah any male Kpop fans claiming their oppas sold millions remember there albums probably have gotten thrown right after them fans have taken the photocards and shitz

the answer isnt less versions - its less POBs. the ridiculous amount of POBs from various stores for fansigns has made it ridiculous. i love physical media cuz im a collector and dont want physical albums to go away
